Different combinations of rainfall, temperature, solar radiation and vapour pressure deficit are the principle determinants of NEP and GPP (van Dijk et al 2005, Baldocchi 2008, Kanniah et al 2010, Baldocchi and Ryu 2011, Zha et al 2013). Tropical forests represent significant sites of C uptake and storage. These are optimised for low water loss, with a high oil content, sunken stomata, and a profusion of tiny hairs which reduce transpiration. Determining the climate thresholds that induce mortality (and recruitment; Mulga is a masting species, producing large seed crops only after exceptionally high rainfall years) and determining how these events might change in the future remains a significant research challenge. Sink activity was not recorded until late February, and this was maintained through to the end of April 2014. Some of these lands are being converted to pasture, and the associated loss of above-ground biomass constitutes an important contribution to Australia's net greenhouse gas emissions.
